unspeakable way. my family was touched by the brutal mass shooting at a law office in san francisco in 1993 where crazed gunman with an assault weapon killed eight people and wounded another six. one of those people was a brave young lawyer who threw his body over his wife's, sacrificing his own life to save hers. that young man was one of my son's best friends. so i can tell you without a shadow of a doubt how these horrific and senseless tragedies live on with the survivors forever. the parents, the spouses, the children, the families, and the friends. it changes their lives forever and it pierces their psyche forever. since 1999 which was the year of the massacre at columbine high school and we'll have a chart to talk about this, 258 students, teachers, and others have been killed in school shootings. another 212 have been wounded due to gun violence at our schools. i will break down just some of those crimes. a 2005 shooting at red lake senior high school in minnesota. >> we're going to go away from this for a bit. when she gets into the meat of the speech we'll fill you in and go

that san francisco city employees have really outshined san francisco's clerk's office didn't need to hear from the mayor to say what's your plan. they offered a plan and said here is our strategy. here is what we can do. we can add all of these computers here and there. we can connect our databases, we can expand our capacity by x. we can open up early and stay late and stay open on the weekends. it's unbelievable. we can coordinate all of the training for our volunteers and them in as deputy marriage commissioners and make sure it's signed and certified. that's an example and a model for others. this is -- what happens is when people prove that things can be done, it just raises the bar for what is possible for everyone else. >> it kind of went cooled plan and this is what we planned for. in some respects, people have kind of commented to me, oh, my god, you were a part of history and how many couples did we mary? how many families did we start? how many dreams did we make come true? the whole part of being part of history is something that we are here and we are charged with this r

on other real estate-related matters. so, the city of san francisco real hayes one of the largest and most diverse land holdings within the city. to give you that context, there are a little over 200,000 parcels, making up 31,000 acres of land in the city, that's excluding the streets which of course the city also controls. so, of those parcels, 2000 of them are in ownership by the city of san francisco. that's almost 6,000 acres, actually it's a little more than 6,000 acres. that means we have ownership of 20% of the acreage within the city and county of san francisco. we also own land far beyond the city. i'll get into that in a bit. but 92,000 acres of land is owned outside of the county. so, our portfolio is not only diverse, it's vast. so, that's speaking to the land mass that we own when we talk about the buildings that we control, we have over 1,100 separate buildings over seven counties. that's totaling about 48 million square feet of improvements throughout that entire portfolio. and interestingly, 85% of that 48 million square feet is controlled by seven different department
